Vintage Polo Ralph Lauren, rendered in that most American of cold-weather signatures: bold red-and-black buffalo check, except Ralph has committed the wonderfully unreasonable act of knitting it in 100% cashmere. Dense, plush and buttery-soft, the substantial knit has the visual heft of an Adirondack lodge blanket with none of the scratch. A generous shawl collar rolls handsomely around the neck and fastens with two dark horn buttons, while ribbed cuffs and hem give the relaxed pullover shape just enough structure. This is Ralph Lauren territory at its most seductive: lumberjack mythology, Ivy polish and unapologetic luxury. The sweater you pull on Christmas morning at the cabin, then forget to remove before cocktails by the fire. Outside, six inches of snow have settled on the Grand Wagoneer and nobody has shown the slightest interest in leaving. Inside, someone has opened the good bourbon. Wear it with faded denim and weathered boots, wide-wale cords and loafers, or under a camel coat with the collar turned up. Add a bandana if you’re feeling particularly Ralph. The scale of the buffalo check makes it graphic rather than precious; the cashmere makes the joke wonderfully extravagant. Rugged from across the room. Pure indulgence the moment you touch it. Very gently worn, if at all. Classic Polo with collector appeal and serious cold-weather charisma.
