A Dutch Art Deco example, this vintage frosted glass Madonna and Child sculpture was designed by artist Stef Uiterwaal (1889–1960) for Glasfabriek Leerdam (Royal Leerdam Glassworks), Netherlands. Originally designed in 1929, Uiterwaal’s interpretation of the Virgin Mary cradling infant Jesus is distinguished by its elegant, elongated form and modernist simplicity. Molded from heavy, solid pressed glass, the sculpture has a satin/frosted finish giving it a luminous quality. Its clean lines and stylized form are quintessentially Art Deco, appealing to collectors of Dutch design and art glass. The reverse base features the raised molded “GUSL” monogram associated with Glasfabriek Leerdam. Uiterwaal’s Madonna and Child is a recognized Leerdam pressed-glass design. Although the original design dates to 1929, authorized later editions used the same mold, making the exact production date difficult to determine. This example is consistent with early 1930s production based on size, finish, and GUSL mark. Condition: Very good vintage condition with a tiny flea bite/nick along the base edge and head; No cracks or repairs noted.
