This is a genuine hand-thrown studio pottery vase created in 1974 by Michael Metz of Metz Studio in Vancouver, Washington. Michael Metz is a longtime Pacific Northwest artist with over 50 years at the wheel, known for one-of-a-kind ceramics that have been exhibited in galleries throughout the Northwest (including SW Washington and Oregon). His early work, like this piece, emphasizes bold texture and earthy tones, while his later pieces often feature complex crystalline and metallic glazes. Rich, dark chocolate-brown glaze with a heavy speckled/toadskin texture on the body • Prominent horizontal throwing rings and ribbed banding for added tactile interest • Classic 1970s studio pottery form: cylindrical body with a waisted neck and slightly irregular rim • Impressed signature on the base: Metz 74 (clearly visible and authentic) Dimensions: • Height: 6 inches • Rim diameter (opening): 2½ inches This smaller-scale vase makes an excellent decorative piece for a shelf, mantel, or tabletop. It works beautifully with a few dried stems, feathers, or simply as sculptural art. The piece is in excellent vintage condition with no chips, cracks, or repairs—minor surface wear consistent with age is normal for a 50+ year-old functional ceramic. A nice example of American studio pottery from the Pacific Northwest, this early Metz piece has modest collector appeal for fans of mid-century and 1970s ceramics.
