Beautiful likely vintage Indian marble ashtray featuring hand-worked floral stone inlay in rich blue, green, amber and dark tones against polished creamy white stone. This type of decorative marble work is traditionally associated with the pietra dura/parchin kari inlay tradition of Agra, India, in which individually shaped pieces of colored stone are fitted into a marble ground to create intricate botanical designs. The piece was most likely originally created as an ashtray, with the deep circular center serving as the ash well. Similar Indian marble-inlay pieces are still described and sold as decorative ashtrays today. What makes this especially appealing now is its versatility. Beyond its original function, it could beautifully serve as a: jewelry or ring dish small catchall for keys, coins or paper clips incense-cone holder decorative candle or tealight holder, if appropriately sized vanity or bedside accent sculptural coffee-table object small collectible piece of Indian handicraft The underside retains an older handwritten label identifying the piece with India, adding another nice piece of provenance. Era: Believed to be late 20th century / likely vintage. Exact date unknown. Condition: Very good vintage condition with age-appropriate surface variation. Please review all photographs for condition and details. Material: Polished natural stone/marble with multicolor stone inlay Origin: India Style: Indian / Mughal Revival / Global Decor /Traditional / Bohemian
