Indonesia Wayang Topeng Mask for traditional dance, carved wooden mask Vintage item This is a mask used in Wayang Topeng, a traditional masked dance drama from Java, Indonesia. It originates from court dances and street performances in Indonesia, particularly in Java. It is used to express the character's personality when performing plays based on historical stories. This is a mask of a man with shaggy hair, with holes for the eyes, nose, and mouth. It may represent the male character Klana with a flushed face, or perhaps another character with pink skin who is lovesick. Although the details are unknown, it possesses captivating charm and strength. There is a rectangular clasp, seemingly made of leather, at the mouth area. The performer holds this in their mouth to secure the mask. It appears they are often custom-made to fit the performer's face shape. Depending on the viewing angle, various expressions can be seen. It has a strong impact and will instantly transform your room into an Indonesian atmosphere. How about using it as a wall hanging or displaying it on a shelf? Size Width 14 x Height 17 (cm) Depth approx. 12 cm Weight Approx. 140g Condition Good vintage condition, has been stored in a private home. This is a used item, passed down from someone who used it in actual Wayang Topeng performances. There are minor dirt, small scratches, and paint peeling. It is unconfirmed whether it can be used in performances by holding it in the mouth. We recommend it for research purposes or as an interior decoration. We ask for your understanding regarding used and vintage items. What is Wayang Topeng? Wayang Topeng is a traditional masked dance drama performed in Java and Bali, Indonesia, by actors wearing masks (topeng). It primarily features the Panji stories (ancient romances) and is performed as a dedication during celebrations such as weddings and birthdays, or during religious ceremonies. A characteristic feature is that the performers switch masks to portray multiple roles. Its history is said to be recorded from around the 10th century. Since human actors wear masks to perform, there is a powerful, lifelike presence. The performers wear masks and act out stories to the live accompaniment of traditional Indonesian instruments called Gamelan. It is a historic performing art that expresses Indonesia's rich culture and stories. Click here for the manufacturer's site
