RL hallmark stamped inside the rectangular cartouche on the back of the wing identifies this piece as a vintage item manufactured by the R.L. Liebmann Manufacturing Company (or R.L. Mfg. Co.) of Newark, New Jersey. The company operated during the late 19th and early 20th centuries (most notably around the WWI era), specializing in military brass accoutrements, uniform buttons, and stamped or cast metal insignia. • Type: This is an ornamental cast or heavy-stamped brass eagle plaque/insignia. Given the 8-inch length and the specific placement of the two small mounting holes on the outer edges of the wings, it was intended as a rigid architectural/furniture mount, a decorative wall plaque, or a front piece for a large historical ceremonial piece (such as a vintage firefighter's high-eagle helmet front or a milita presentation box). Design Features: The front side features standard American patriotic symbolism: a spread-winged bald eagle carrying a Union/US Shield on its chest, grasping an olive branch (symbolizing peace) in one talon and arrows (symbolizing war) in the other. • Back Details: The flat, un-detailed reverse side showing hollow cutouts and the prominent RL hallmark confirms it was cast/stamped to be permanently flush-mounted to a flat wood, leather, or cloth surface. 8 x 5
