Limited Edition Book BADFISH Kaoru Ohno Surf Hero Kaoru Ohno to the Next Generation Kaoru Ohno, who lived as a surfer from the 1970s to the 1990s in Shonan, a central hub of Japanese coastal culture, suddenly ended his life on August 30, 1999. His funeral was held on the beach in Shichirigahama, attended by over 800 friends and acquaintances dressed in aloha shirts and t-shirts. The scattering of ashes ceremony at the end of the funeral remains a legend among surfers to this day. As described in the non-fiction work Summer Days, which depicts Kaoru Ohno's life, as being like a slightly incomplete full moon, he did not leave behind easily understandable achievements, either as a professional surfer or as a creator. So, why were so many people drawn to him? It is none other than because they resonated with and admired his style as a surfer, in other words, the way of life that Kaoru Ohno derived from surfing. Looking at the present day, surfing has become an Olympic sport and is gaining attention as a sport. On the other hand, what about surfing as a lifestyle? Are there any surfers who live a life that captivates and inspires everyone? This book begins with the story of Izumi Shiraise, who spent a long time with Kaoru Ohno in California, and is composed of tribute works drawn by artists, interviews with Kaoru's Children, a Pineapple Betty's catalog, and a collection of episodes. Featuring a wealth of unpublished photographs by his close friend Taisuke Yokoyama, it unravels What is Kaoru Ohno? and passes it on to the next generation. The Meaning Behind the Title Badfish Literally translated, it means bad fish. However, in this book, badfish is a word symbolizing a fish that swims against the current—that is, a person who lived according to their own beliefs, without being bound by common sense or norms. However, it is certain that this sense of discomfort and isolation became the driving force for creating a breakthrough in existing values.
