While there are specific times for displaying traditional Hagoita and Hahama-yumi, as they are considered good luck charms, there is no problem with displaying them outside of those periods. The history of the Hahama-yumi is ancient, believed to have originated from the Shurai (a ritual of shooting at a target with a bow) held in the Imperial Court during the Yamato period (around 647 AD). At that time, bows were believed to be sacred objects with the power to ward off evil spirits, and were used in various court ceremonies. It began to be displayed as a charm to ward off evil in the modern sense around the Kamakura period, triggered by the custom of gifting bows and arrows, which were important to samurai, for a boy's first New Year. This custom gradually spread to the general public, and eventually became widely adopted as a good luck charm to display at home for a boy's first New Year. Incidentally, Hahama-yumi are often displayed together with Hahama-ya, and Hahama-ya may be more commonly seen in general. They are often given at temples and shrines during Hatsumode (first shrine visit of the year), and many households display them as evil warding charms, regardless of whether they have boys or not.
