The flower colors range from reddish-purple to light pink and white, forming conical inflorescences at the tips of new branches. The leaves are strongly rounded, oval-shaped, and entire-margined. The leaf arrangement is unusual, with two leaves on each side of the branch, sometimes opposite. As the name Sarusuberi (meaning slippery as a monkey) suggests, a major characteristic is that the bark peels off, making the trunk smooth.
