This is a listing for a Sometsuke Arandajin-zu Kompura Bottle from the Wazan kiln, produced in Hasami Town, Nagasaki Prefecture. There are some minor scratches, but they do not affect usability. The history of Hasami ware is as old as that of its neighboring town, Arita. It began when potters brought back from Korea after Hideyoshi's invasions of Korea (Bunroku and Keicho eras) opened kilns. Initially, glazed pottery was fired, but eventually, full-scale porcelain production began, focusing on sometsuke (blue and white) and celadon. In the mid-Edo period, vessels with simple sometsuke patterns called Kurawanka bowls became popular. They were widely favored for their beauty in their rustic brushwork. Modern Hasami ware is mainly produced in factories rather than by individual artists, and many modern designs that suit current lifestyles can be seen. Kurawanka bowls originated from merchants in Settsu (present-day Osaka) who would approach boats on the Yodo River in small boats and sell them, saying, Do you want to eat rice cakes (mochi kurawanka)? Do you want to drink sake (sake kurawanka)? Hasami ware is a type of pottery that carries the tradition of the Kurawanka bowl, which has been incorporated into everyday vessels. This piece was created by the Wazan kiln, inspired by the Kompura bottles that were popular during the Edo period. Kompura bottles refer to bottles made of Hasami ware that developed and flourished between 1665 and 1873 during the Edo period, which were used to bottle soy sauce and sake for export from Dejima in Nagasaki. Kompura is derived from the Portuguese word comprador, meaning middleman. Nagasaki merchants established the Konpurasha cooperative and exported Japanese products through the East India Company. They were called Kompura bottles because they were used as containers for soy sauce and sake, which were export products. Inspired by the historical context of Kompura bottles once produced in Hasami, this piece boldly combines NAGASAKI with the image of a Dutch person, creating a distinction from ordinary bottles. The cork stopper is also faithful to the original design, and amusingly, it serves as a straw hat lid, fully showcasing the Western motif. The Wazan kiln is a very popular Hasami ware kiln even today, with many visitors to the store daily, and it has recently been attracting attention from young people. This piece was produced during the Showa and Heisei periods. It possesses the beauty of sometsuke, which is not a characteristic of the modern Wazan kiln. Its shape is also excellent, making it suitable for use as a sake flask or a flower vase. The size is as shown in the photos. Thank you for your consideration.
