Hand-decorated patterns were the very essence of the majority of the thousands of designs produced during the firms existence. He launched a production operation in Hanley in 1912. Gray's was a small pottery compared to its nearby competitors but its 1930s slogan The Pottery of Distinction rang true. Their range was massive, all from a firm that manufactured for a mere 50 years, including the severely disruptive periods of two world wars. By the 1950s hand-painting, as practiced by the likes of Grays Pottery, was rapidly disappearing. By 1962 a new back stamp was introduced and the name Grays Pottery no longer existed.
