Croata is a Zagreb-based Croatian necktie maker, and their label leans into the fact that Croatia is literally the birthplace of the necktie — the word “cravat” derives from “Croat,” after the knotted scarves Croatian cavalry soldiers wore in the 1600s that the French fashion world adopted. Their tag reads “Handmade in Croatia, Homeland of the Cravat,” and they position themselves as a heritage/souvenir luxury brand, sold in their own boutiques in Zagreb and Dubrovnik. The motif is the best part: the woven equestrian figure is almost certainly the Ban Josip Jelačić monument — the famous horseman statue in Zagreb’s main square, one of Croatia’s national symbols.
