This marigold carnival glass cuspidor was produced by Jeannette Glass Company, a prominent American glassmaker active from 1898 to 1983. The crackle effect was achieved through a special manufacturing process where hot glass was dipped in cold water, creating the characteristic fractured appearance, then reheated and pressed into molds. The iridescent marigold finish was created by spraying metallic salts onto the hot glass surface. While cuspidors were originally functional items for tobacco users, by the mid-20th century they had become primarily decorative pieces, often marketed as planters or candy dishes during the carnival glass revival of the 1960s-1970s. Carnival glass cuspidors are highly prized by collectors of American pressed glass and vintage tobacciana. The distinctive cuspidor form, combined with the warm marigold iridescence and unique crackle texture, makes these pieces particularly appealing to carnival glass enthusiasts and collectors of Americana. Jeannette Glass examples are valued for their quality craftsmanship and the company's historical significance in American glass production. These pieces attract both carnival glass collectors and those interested in Victorian-era decorative arts, as they represent a charming blend of functional design and ornamental beauty.
