A stunning first edition of this celebrated photography book by renowned German portraitist Walter Schels, published by the prestigious Edition Stemmle in 2001. This large-format hardcover (36.5 × 27.5 cm / approx. 14 × 11) features 120 pages of breathtaking black-and-white animal photography that transcends the genre entirely. Schels approaches his animal subjects with the same gravitas and technique he brings to human portraiture — using a large-format camera to capture the deeply individual personalities of each creature. The result is a collection of images that is at once scientifically observant and profoundly moving. From the melancholy gaze of a chimpanzee to the quiet dignity of a sheep, each portrait commands the viewer's full attention and respect. With a foreword by noted animal behaviorist Dennis C. Turner, this volume bridges the worlds of fine art photography, natural history, and humanist philosophy — evoking the 18th-century physiognomist tradition of reading character through facial features. A must-have for collectors of: * Fine art & photography books * Nature & animal art * German photography * Large-format coffee table books
