This pitcher exemplifies the Victorian era's fascination with decorative art glass, particularly the cased glass technique where layers of different colored glass are fused together. The spiral ribbing and ruffled crimped rim were hallmarks of late 19th-century American and English glasshouses, with makers like Stevens & Williams, Fenton, and other art glass manufacturers producing similar pieces between 1880 and 1910. These pitchers served both functional and decorative purposes in Victorian homes, often displayed on sideboards or used for water service during formal occasions. The powder blue coloration with opalescent qualities was achieved through careful manipulation of glass chemistry and temperature during the blowing process. Victorian art glass pieces like this pitcher are highly prized by collectors of antique glassware and Victoriana enthusiasts. The combination of the delicate ruffled edge, spiral ribbing, and cased glass construction demonstrates the technical skill of 19th-century glassblowers. These pieces appeal to collectors who appreciate the craftsmanship and aesthetic beauty of the Victorian decorative arts movement, as well as those who specialize in American or English art glass from this golden age of glass production. We aren't clear on the manufacturer; it could be Stourbridge or Steven's and Williams. We'd love to hear from anyone with any information. Thanks so much!
