This is a woodblock print titled Flying Fish by Japanese artist Bakufu Ono (1888-1976). This work was published in January 1938 as the 6th print in the first series of his representative work Illustrated Book of Japanese Fish (total 72 prints), which was published between 1937 and 1944. Artwork Features: Dynamic Depiction: Bakufu Ono frequently visited aquariums and even rode in submarines to observe fish underwater, in order to depict their ecology realistically. Meticulous Technique: Produced using an extremely labor-intensive and precise technique called original color woodblock printing, 200-layer hand-rubbing, which realistically expresses the scales and texture of the fish. Fantastical Background: In contrast to the realistic depiction of the fish, the background features stylized swirling waves, creating a unique, dreamlike atmosphere. About the Artist: Bakufu Ono (real name: Yōzō) was a painter born in Tokyo. He initially studied Western-style painting but later switched to Japanese-style painting. As fishing was one of his hobbies, he left behind many excellent works throughout his life with fish and aquatic life as his subjects, and is also known as the painter of fish. (Excerpted from the web) As I am unfamiliar with prints, I may not be able to answer specialized questions. Please understand. There are some tears and pinholes on the corners and edges. These should not be visible once framed. The overall appearance is somewhat faded. As this is an old item, there is age-related deterioration. Please check the images. A frame is not included. Due to the nature of the product, returns are not accepted, so please consider carefully. Click here for the manufacturer's site
