Thank you for taking an interest in my listing among so many others. I am offering for sale classical prints produced/published in Europe, which I have collected as a personal hobby for about 30 years. (Product Description) Title: The First British Foothold In Borneo Publication Year: 1903 Size: Image: Height 31.5cm, Width 23.2cm Mat: Height 49.2cm, Width 38.2cm Source: The Illustrated London News Printing Method: Woodcut, Hand-colored Condition: In good condition with no age-related yellowing or stains. This item is not framed, but it is matted and has been stored at home for a long time without being displayed, so it remains in the same condition as when I purchased it. As shown in the 17th photo, there is a sticker from the antique map dealer from whom I purchased it on the bottom right corner of the back of the mat board. (Product Explanation) This is a vivid depiction of the scene where the British were first granted an audience with the Sultan of Borneo, published in the British newspaper The Illustrated London News on August 29, 1903. It illustrates the audience granted in 1842 to the British explorer James Brooke. This print is based on a work by the British painter Richard Caton Woodville (with a printed signature in the bottom left corner of the image) and was steel engraved for publication in the 1903 issue. It was treated as an important piece, occupying a full page of the newspaper, and is a valuable scene of international news that conveys an important event of the time. The Sultan is seated in what appears to be a throne-like seat in the center, surrounded by guards and local people. Beside the Sultan, the gentleman looking at a document and about to sign it is Brooke. He was later granted the right to govern Sarawak, received the title of White Rajah, and established the Brooke dynasty. How about this for collectors of illustrations from the London newspaper The Illustrated London News, or for those who are interested in the history and scenery of Southeast Asia, particularly Indochina? I hope you will enjoy it by framing it to your liking. Click here for the manufacturer's site Easy to find furniture and interiors! Click here for Askul's general furniture TOP page.
