A Supreme Landscape by Shinsui Ito, a Master of Modern Japanese Painting. A Rare Woodblock Print Created in 1941. This work, depicting a majestic Mt. Fuji, is by Shinsui Ito, renowned as a leading artist of bijin-ga (pictures of beautiful women) and a pioneer of Shin-hanga (New Prints), which carried on the tradition of Ukiyo-e into the modern era. ■ Appeal of the Artwork The title is Lake Yamanaka: Fuji at Dawn. It captures a serene yet powerful moment as the light of dawn illuminates the slopes of Mt. Fuji. Ito's characteristic delicate sense of color is fully displayed even in this landscape, with a superb contrast between the shimmering surface of Lake Yamanaka and the nobly towering Mt. Fuji.
