This Hand towel expresses the kun-reading of 稽古 (Keiko), thinking of the past, in Japanese. It is designed so that 稽古 can be recognized horizontally, while the characters are arranged vertically in two lines. 稽 means to think, and 古 means past. Originally, it meant studying by reading books. Today, it is used to mean learning martial arts or performing arts. It is said to originate from 稽古照今 (Keiko Shokon) in the preface of the Kojiki (Records of Ancient Matters). The fabric used is 特岡 (Tokuoka), which is woven with thick, firm threads at high density, and dyed using 注染 (Chusen), a traditional dyeing method by skilled Japanese artisans.
