Framed size: 64.5cm x 61.5cm. The main artwork is a sumi-e painting and waka poem, measuring 48cm x 45.5cm. Original brushwork by Wakayama Bokusui. Biography Bokusui's Waterfall near Hitsuyamako Park (Chichibu City, Saitama Prefecture, photographed on April 24, 2009) Bokusui's uta monument (Mishima City, Shizuoka Prefecture, Mishima Taisha Shrine) Agematsuri no hana of Mishima town, like a wandering path, scattering and disappearing in the moonlit sky. Born as the eldest son of Ryuzo Wakayama, a doctor in Tsuboya Village (now Hyuga City), Higashiusuki District, Miyazaki Prefecture. In 1899 (Meiji 32), he entered Miyazaki Prefectural Nobeoka Junior High School and began writing tanka and haiku. At the age of 18, he adopted the pen name Bokusui. The origin is it is a combination of two names of things I loved most at the time. 'Boku' is 'maki,' which is my mother's name. 'Sui' came from the streams and rain around my birthplace. [2] In 1904 (Meiji 37), he entered Waseda University. His classmate was Kitahara Imizu (later Hakushu). He was present at the deathbed of Ishikawa Takuboku. In the same year, Mizuho acted as a matchmaker, and he married Kishiko. In 1913 (Taisho 2), his eldest son, Tabito (1913-1998), was born. He later had two daughters and one son. In 1920 (Taisho 9), he moved his entire family to Numazu, as he loved the nature of Numazu and was particularly captivated by the scenery of Senbon Matsubara. In 1926 (Taisho 15), he founded the comprehensive poetry magazine Shika Jidai. In the same year, he took the lead in opposing the planned logging of Senbon Matsubara by the Shizuoka Prefecture, writing a letter to the newspaper against the plan, which led to its abandonment. After Bokusui's death, the poetry magazine Sakuso was inherited by his wife, Kishiko, who was also a poet. His eldest son, Tabito, also became a poet and served as the second director of the Wakayama Bokusui Memorial Museum in Numazu City. Personality He enjoyed train travel and left behind essays that can be considered pioneering works of railway travel literature. He was also known as a heavy drinker (or alcoholic), reportedly drinking one sho (about 1.8 liters) of sake a day. [7] The major cause of his death was liver cirrhosis, and he drank a total of 1300cc of sake the day before he died, and about 100cc at breakfast on the day he died. [8] The previous year Wakayama Bokusui Memorial Museum in Numazu City He is also known for his passionate love affairs, and there are poems that express his intense love for Saeko Sonoda before he met his wife Kishiko. In his home prefecture of Miyazaki, in honor of Bokusui's achievements, a monument was erected in 1996 (Heisei 8) with the inscription Tanka continues in the old rows of houses, commemorating the spring in Chichibu. Representative Poems If I cross many mountains and rivers, will the loneliness end in that land? I travel today. Are swans not sad?
