A delightful pair of vintage wall candle sconces with an unusually charming bird-and-nest motif. Each cast-metal sconce depicts two birds among leafy flowering branches, including a bird leaning toward a nest of waiting chicks below. The opposing compositions create a pleasing sense of symmetry when displayed together, while the deeply modeled birds, leaves and branches give the relatively petite sconces surprising presence. The silver-tone finish has developed substantial patina over time, lending them the layered, collected quality that works particularly well in English cottage, traditional and grandmillennial interiors. At under nine inches tall, they're an easy scale for flanking a small mirror or artwork, adding to a gallery wall, or bringing candlelight and a little old-world character to a reading nook or powder room. Marked with original Made in India label on the reverse. Late 20th century. Each measures approximately 8.75 H × 5 W × 3.5 D. In very good vintage condition with substantial age-related patina, oxidation, tarnishing, finish variation and surface wear, particularly to the candle cups, drip plates and reverse surfaces. The backs show areas of gold-toned metal as well as blue-green and darker oxidation. No attempt has been made to polish away the aged finish.
