This uranium glass refrigerator dish dates to the Depression Era of the 1930s, when manufacturers like Hazel-Atlas and Hocking Glass Company produced affordable glassware for American households. The distinctive green color comes from uranium oxide added to the glass, which causes it to fluoresce under ultraviolet light. These practical pieces were designed to store leftovers in the newly popular electric refrigerators of the era, combining functionality with the decorative ribbed pattern that characterized Depression glass. Uranium glass refrigerator dishes are highly sought after by Depression glass collectors and vintage kitchenware enthusiasts for their historical significance, distinctive glow-in-the-dark properties, and Art Deco aesthetic. The ribbed oval pattern and vibrant green color make these pieces particularly appealing to collectors who appreciate both the craftsmanship and the nostalgia of 1930s American domestic life. These dishes represent an important period in American manufacturing history when beautiful glassware was made accessible to working-class families during economically challenging times.
