Title: Our Age (Наш век) – Soviet Portraits by Moses Nappelbaum Publisher: Ardis Publishers, Ann Arbor (1984) Format: Oversized Paperback / Softcover, 151 pages Language: Bilingual (English and Russian text) Item Overview: Up for sale is a rare copy of Our Age (Наш век), the definitive retrospective monograph of Moses Nappelbaum (1869–1958), the premier master portrait photographer of the early Soviet era. Published in 1984 by the legendary Ardis Publishers in Michigan, this scarce Tamizdat edition brought over 200 of Nappelbaum's unedited, striking prints to the West. The book features 221 high-quality photographic plates capturing the absolute peak of the Soviet and Silver Age cultural elite. The iconic cover showcases Nappelbaum’s famous 1921 profile portrait of the modernist poet Anna Akhmatova. Inside, you will find his legendary studio portraits of Vladimir Lenin, Boris Pasternak, Sergey Yesenin, and Dmitry Shostakovich, utilizing his signature Rembrandt-inspired single-light technique. Very Good condition. The softcover binding is tight with a strong spine. Minor shelf wear and light scuffing on the cover corners consistent with age. Pages are completely clean, crisp, and free of any writing, highlighting, or dog-ears. A beautifully preserved collector's copy.
