The lidded vessel originates from India. It is a traditional Indian cooking and serving vessel called a Handi (specifically used for slow-cooking dishes like biryani, curries, and dals). The specific design combination—a hand-hammered bulbous copper body paired with an engraved brass lid and side handles—is classic Indian metalsmithing heritage. The second item is a brass etched vase or bowl. The Sarna India brand has a rich history tied to the introduction of Indian handicrafts to the American market. If the interior of your bowl or vase has a silver-colored metallic. History of Sarna IndiaThe company was founded in 1920 in Manhasset, New York by Sajan Singh Sarna, an immigrant from British India. The Import Boom: Sarna noticed a massive American appreciation for Indian artisan skills. By the 1930s and through the mid-century, he built an import empire bringing handcrafted brass art, textiles, and household goods to the West. The lid from the copper vessel also fits on this item. Purpose of the Inner Lining- Traditional solid brass reacts poorly to acids in food, water, or plant fertilizers, causing a bitter taste or green corrosion (verdigris). Why it looks like steel: To make these copper and brass vessels. Safe Utility: This silvery lining created a non-reactive barrier. Stainless steel interiors became widespread in Indian kitchenware manufacturing around the late 1960s and 1970s. Great vintage condition / see pictures. Sold as a 3 piece set .
