A beautiful antique from Italy or France, circa the 19th century, purchased in Italy. This is an exquisite handmade linen runner, adorned with delicate lace that evokes a poetic scene of swans gracefully standing by a waterscape with water plants floating. The embroidery and lace are characterized by tranquility, purity, and elegance. Using the Point de Paris bobbin lace technique, motifs of 10 pairs (20 swans) and water plants facing a lake/swamp/pond/river emerge from the mesh. The picot edging around the entire border adds a delicate charm. The center linen features a lattice pattern of drawn thread/ladder embroidery lace, meticulously sewn by drawing threads from the fabric. This creates 48 grid-like lace patterns on the fabric, evoking a sense of coolness. The color is an elegant, antique ecru with a plaster-like finish. It has a tone that suggests natural plant colors, with hints of gray and a pale grassy khaki. The fabric is high-quality (Irish) linen with a lattice pattern of drawn thread embroidery. The threads are very fine and have a pleasant stiffness, creating a wonderful fabric texture. The fabric is thinly woven with fine threads, giving it a sheer quality. It has a smooth, supple, and dry touch, with a slight sheen and luster. The material is likely high-quality linen, or possibly a linen-silk blend. The lace feels smooth and soft, perhaps a cotton and linen blend. It appears to be unused, possibly an aged, never-used item. Please excuse any errors in the amateur measurements of this handmade piece: 37.5 cm x 27.5 cm Lace border width: approx. 3.5 cm Weight: approx. 9g To preserve the color and texture, it is best not to bleach it. If it gets dirty, we recommend gently washing the entire piece with a (natural) soap and drying it immediately. The lace was not a separately made tape sewn on, but rather a lace frame created to match the fabric, either hand-sewn onto the fabric or embroidered around the edges.
