I wanted to buy a Nagauta Shamisen and purchased a practice one along with a set (which I didn't particularly need) on Mercari. When I found the neck was short, I was puzzled. I took it to a trusted shamisen shop I frequent, and they identified it as a Minyo Shamisen, used for playing in a higher register with a shorter neck. Although it was described as being made of Karin wood and for practice, inside the doukake (body cover), there's an inscription: Core Material: Kyogi wood used. This suggests the core and possibly the body itself are made of Kyogi wood. At the shamisen shop, they tried to remove the neck from the body to inspect its condition, but it wouldn't budge even with considerable force. At that point, the body's adhesive slightly gave way (the skin was already torn). When I got home, I tried pulling it out further, even if it meant breaking it. The shamisen shop mentioned it seemed like something was glued in. Indeed, there appeared to be small wooden pieces inserted into the neck's joint with the body. I carefully pulled them out with pliers, and it came apart, but the body completely disassembled. The wooden pieces are still attached to the base. (The body) has only come apart at the glued joints, so it's possible to reassemble it, re-skin it, and use it if you're willing to spend money. However, I'm a bit concerned about the crack in the part of the neck that fits into the body. I wonder if it's worth the effort to reassemble and use it. (It doesn't seem to be at the point of breaking yet.) Also, the reinforcement at the base of the body makes me wonder if it was loose. However, the surface of the body is beautiful, and the neck is very clean with no signs of wear and is straight. (However, there are silver pen marks at the ito-dokoro (string positions).) Furthermore, the metal fittings on the ito-maki (tuning pegs) are called kikuzashi, which are decorative and beautiful. The shamisen shop mentioned they were common in the Kansai region in the past, suggesting they are rare. For the ito-maki, the one for the third string has cracked at the base when twisted (almost broken) and is unusable. The Tenjin (headpiece) has a chipped part. I think it would be best used for casual play. (By the way, beginners who think they've found a lucky bargain, please be aware that the cost of assembly, re-skinning, and/or repairs will be quite high! ⚠️) The sawari (buzzing mechanism) parts are as shown in the photos. I plan to ship the neck disassembled, but due to the delicate nature of the connecting parts, I will pack them with care. Thank you. Click here for the manufacturer's site
