Beautiful antique doily from Belgium, Handmade coaster with a swan motif. Crafted with dozens, even hundreds, of bobbins, Made in the Flanders region of Belgium, Dating back to around 1930... nearly a century old, This linen round mat is adorned with Flemish lace trim. The trim features a double-crossed mesh/tulle. An outline created with slightly thicker, lustrous threads brings to life elegant swans and floral motifs. While I initially imagined water plants, vases, or flower stands, it is said to be a relief of lily flowers ⚜. It might even be a knight motif. The edge has a small, delicate picot lace. Feathers and petals are expressed through cutwork. A swan quietly resting on a lake seems to appear before your eyes. The style evokes a gentle, graceful charm, along with the noble dignity and strength of swans or knights. The color is a clean ecru, an nuanced off-white. The texture is a blend of smoothness, softness, and a gentle, dry, relaxed feel. When viewed up close, a subtle sheen and luster can be perceived. The center fabric is fine-count, high-quality linen. The material is likely natural linen, or perhaps a linen and cotton blend. The yarn feels resilient and taut. Please excuse any minor errors in the amateur measurements below for this handmade item. Diameter: 12.2-12.6 cm Center portion: 5.3 cm Weight: Approx. 2g A beautiful, near-perfect circle. In clean condition with no stains or damage. The final image shows the reverse side. As this is a handmade item that has passed through many years, please excuse any minor imperfections that do not interfere with its use or display. Compared to thinly woven, dense lace, this piece is not overly intricate, nor is it so delicate that it might tear easily to the touch. It is easy to handle. It bears a resemblance to Point de Gaze lace and Mechlin lace. I wonder if they are connected or influenced each other. I would be delighted if someone who appreciates it could find various ways to use it ✧ The following is the same item I listed previously. I feel this current piece has a better finish in terms of needlework and overall balance ⇓ Antique Belgian Flemish Bobbin Lace Coaster Doily with Swans and Lilies The cross displayed above is also available for purchase, listed just before this item. It has a simple, quiet, and gentle atmosphere ⇓ Antique French Black Wood Cylindrical Cross with Silver Jesus Christ Ars Search terms: Baccarat Saint Louis Ballerina Ballet White Swan Click here for the manufacturer's site
