A beautiful antique piece from Belgium, purchased in France, dating from around the 19th century. Decorated with Flanders bobbin lace embroidery and drawn thread embroidery, this runner, tablecloth, or mat features motifs of drooping roses, flags, ribbons, hearts, gates, and other mysterious, abstractly beautiful designs. The drawn thread embroidery creates a cool, lattice-like pattern by drawing threads from the fabric. The grid-like lace on the fabric evokes a sense of coolness and enhances the delicate atmosphere. It appears to have 35 blocks. The striking, plump embroidered initial is likely the monogram LCM. The embroidery incorporates three-dimensional plants and buds, arranged in a circular pattern. Elegant white thread embroidery adorns the piece, with delicate picots along the entire edge. The color is an elegant cream ivory, a nuanced ecru with hints of pale yellow and light grassy khaki, reminiscent of natural plant tones. It is presumed to be unused. The fabric is a thin, sheer weave made from fine threads, with a very smooth and soft texture and a slight sheen. The fabric material is likely high-quality linen or a linen blend, and the embroidery thread is probably linen. Please excuse any errors in the amateur measurements of this handmade item: Length: 57 cm x Width: 34.5-35 cm Trim lace width: approx. 1.3 cm Weight: approx. 15g In good condition with no noticeable scratches or stains. As this is an old handmade item, please excuse any minor oversights. To preserve its color and texture, it is best not to bleach it. If it becomes soiled, we recommend gently washing the entire piece with natural soap and drying it immediately. Flanders lace is a traditional Belgian art and craft technique that spread throughout Flanders in the 19th century, as a successor to 16th-century Binche lace, Flemish lace, and Mechelen lace. It is created using multiple small bobbins to weave intricate, lacy mesh bases with unique raised relief patterns. The delicate and graceful style of Belgian lace has a history of being admired and loved by royalty, nobles, and clergy throughout Europe.
