Taisho Era Antique Maru Obi Cream background with fan, crane, and chrysanthemum pattern. The pattern is the same on both sides. Size: Obi width: 32 cm Length: 405 cm A maru obi is a type of Japanese women's obi. It is made by folding a piece of fabric, measuring approximately 1 shaku 8 sun 5 bu wide and 1 jo 1 shaku 5 sun or more in length, in half lengthwise and sewing the edges, then inserting a canvas interlining to create an obi of half the width. The pattern is the same on both the front and back. The maru obi was devised in the mid-Edo period to accommodate larger hairstyles, with the obi width and knot becoming larger for formal wear. Fabrics such as Nishijin-ori, Kinran, and Donza were used for the obi material. (Source: Wikipedia) When worn with a furisode kimono, its splendor is comparable to modern fukuro obi. It can also be used as a tapestry or table runner. It also makes a wonderful gift for someone from overseas. As this is an old item, please understand that there may be some stains or scuffs.
