Large hand-built-style earthenware olla pottery vessel featuring dramatic natural-looking black fire-clouding and an unusual rawhide-laced exterior. The substantial 14-inch size, rounded body, flared neck and dimensional hide lattice make this an impressive Southwestern piece. The construction and overall appearance closely resemble documented pottery associated with the Rarámuri, also commonly called Tarahumara, of northern Mexico. Traditional Rarámuri pottery is formed by hand using coiled clay and traditionally open-fire fired, creating the irregular smoky black, gray and terracotta coloration seen on many examples. This vessel is unmarked and has no accompanying provenance, so the Tarahumara/Rarámuri attribution should be considered stylistic rather than independently authenticated. Sold as is. No warranty from the Seller. No Returns. Approx. Dimensions: 14 T x 11 W x 11 D SKU: AS018 CONDITION: Pre-owned vintage/handmade pottery vessel with age/use wear. The clay body shows scattered surface scratches, scuffs, rubs, small nicks and natural firing/finish irregularities; dark black/gray fire-clouding appears integral to the original firing. The rawhide/sinew-style lacing is dry, aged and uneven, with several loose, frayed, stretched or broken ends and areas detached from the pierced hide collars, as pictured. Rim shows minor wear/nicks. No maker's mark found. See all pictures and read the full description provided by the seller to know what you are purchasing.
