Issei Yamauchi (1929-2024) was a Japanese paper craft artist from Obara Village (now Toyota City), Nishikamo District, Aichi Prefecture, and is considered a leading figure in Obara Japanese paper crafts. After his first selection at the Nitten exhibition in 1953, he was selected 11 times, and in 1965, he received the Nitten Special Award and the Hokuto Prize. He was exempt from preliminary judging at Nitten in 1966 and served as a judge for Nitten in 1974 and 1981. He also served as a judge for the Japan Contemporary Crafts Exhibition, the Japan New Crafts Exhibition, and the Kofu-kai Exhibition, among others. In 1959, he was commissioned to create a pair of six-panel folding screens to celebrate the wedding of the Crown Prince. In 1979, a two-panel folding screen purchased by Aichi Prefecture was presented to Their Majesties the Emperor and Empress. In addition, works purchased by Aichi Prefecture have been donated to the US Ambassador and the British Ambassador, and works purchased by Toyota Motor Corporation have been donated to the World Rotary Club President, the US Ambassador, and the Finnish Ambassador. This piece features raised flowers, giving it a three-dimensional effect. He passed away last year (2024) at the age of 95, making his existing works precious.
