This Maki-e (gold lacquer) inro, a symbol of Japanese traditional culture, is combined with a netsuke featuring a three-dimensionally carved figure. Over many years, the gold Maki-e and lacquer have naturally blended, creating a depth and aged patina that modern items lack. ■ Condition ・Scratches, lacquer peeling, and fading of gold Maki-e due to age. ・Signs of use on the cord. *Overall good condition for an antique item. *Please judge the condition based on the photos. Central themes of this design: Utopia, Peace, and a Leisurely Life + Journey, Travel, Business, and Career Advancement Luck These two themes are combined. ■ Meaning of Motifs Explained ① Pavilions/Houses (Buildings) = Stability, Foundation, Prosperity of Family Lineage The elevated, pavilion-style building roof is emphasized. This symbolizes settled life and stability of social status and occupation. Since inro were possessions of townspeople and samurai of status, this design signifies pride in one's position while wishing for stability. ② Waterside/Wave Pattern = Flow of Life, Passage of Time Gentle waves, not turbulent water. This means a smooth life and days without turmoil. It's important that these are controlled waves, not rough seas. ③ Boat (Small boat) = Life, Business, Journey, Travel This is a very important motif. A boat represents oneself and the vessel that carries one's life. Especially in the Edo period, it was strongly associated with merchants, official business for domains, traveling sales, and journeys. It signifies good fortune, riding a good current and reaching the destination safely. ④ Figure (Person on a boat) = One who actively steers their life. A boat is meaningless without a person. This indicates a life of steering the rudder, not a life of being swept away. ⑤ Overall Composition (Mountains, Trees, Buildings, Water, Boat) This concept originates from China but is interpreted in Japan as follows: A microcosm of an ideal life (a world of utopia). Mountains → Protected world Water → Flow Buildings → Settled life Boat → Travel A world where people can freely enter and exit this utopia. ■ Why this design on an inro? Inro served as a wallet, identification, and amulet. This design symbolizes ✔ Success ✔ Stability ✔ And freedom representing an **ideal human image.** ■ Antique Positioning This type of Maki-e was common among townspeople and the wealthy from the late Edo to early Meiji periods. It wasn't the absolute highest grade but was chosen by those who understood its meaning, making it a connoisseur's choice that still appeals to collectors both domestically and internationally. ■ Please Note This item is not new; it is an antique and a work of historical art.
