A teleconverter works similarly to the telephoto group of a suitable telephoto lens. It consists of multiple lens groups that function as a single diverging lens. The teleconverter is positioned so that the image generated by the lens is located behind the focal point at a distance shorter than the focal length. This image then becomes the virtual object for the teleconverter, which focuses and magnifies it further. For example, if a single negative lens is placed midway between the lens and its focal point, the lens will form an image at the focal point, and this image will be magnified by two times, functioning as a 2x teleconverter. 2. When used with a relatively slow lens, the effective aperture becomes smaller, which may cause the camera's autofocus system to malfunction. Depending on the camera system, this range is typically between f/5.6 and f/8. 3. Dedicated teleconverters only work with a limited number of lenses, usually telephoto lenses manufactured by the same company or telephoto lenses manufactured by third-party companies that have been standardized. 4. While using a teleconverter with an existing lens is generally less expensive than buying a separate long-distance telephoto lens, teleconverters magnify the existing image circle, thus also magnifying aberrations.
