?? Unused ?? Yomitan-zan Hanaori (Flower Weave) from Okinawa ?? Details Approximately 47 x 29.5 cm Yomitan-zan Hanaori is a textile produced in Yomitan Village, Nakagami District, Okinawa Prefecture. The characteristic of Yomitan-zan Hanaori is that geometric patterns resembling flowers are woven into the fabric using pre-dyed threads. Silk or cotton threads are used as materials, and dyes such as Ryukyu indigo, fukugi (Garcinia scortechinii), and suō (sappanwood) are used for dyeing. Traditional Yomitan-zan Hanaori features flower patterns in red, yellow, and white on a navy blue background dyed with Ryukyu indigo. Basic motifs for the flower patterns are fixed, and each has a meaning. The Jinbana (money flower) pattern, resembling coins, signifies wealth. The Oojibana (fan flower) pattern, with its auspiciously widening fan shape, represents prosperity for descendants. The Kajimayabana (pinwheel flower) is shaped like a pinwheel, celebrating longevity in accordance with Okinawan customs. By combining these basic patterns with stripes and checks, more complex designs are created, resulting in a textile with simple yet three-dimensional floral patterns that give it a gorgeous atmosphere. As this is a very labor-intensive textile, it was a precious fabric that, during the Ryukyu Kingdom era, was only permitted to be worn by royalty and commoners from Yomitan Village. It has been stored in a box and is unused. The box shows signs of deterioration. This size is perfect as a decorative mat to protect tables and other surfaces from scratches. ??
